God is gracious towards you

And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.

Exodus 34:6

In Book of Exodus 34:6, God reveals His own character to Moses with these words: “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth.” This is one of the most important descriptions of God in all of Scripture because it shows us who He truly is at His heart.

The timing of this revelation is significant. Israel had just sinned greatly by worshiping the golden calf. They had broken covenant with God shortly after promising obedience. Yet when God speaks, He does not begin with destruction or rejection. Instead, He declares His mercy, grace, patience, goodness, and truth. This does not mean God ignores sin, but it shows that His desire is to restore rather than destroy.

First, God is merciful. Mercy means He does not give us the punishment we deserve. Every person has fallen short of God’s holiness, yet He continues to reach toward humanity with compassion. Second, He is gracious. Grace means He gives blessings we could never earn. Salvation itself is a gift of grace, fully revealed through Jesus Christ.

God also describes Himself as longsuffering, or patient. Human patience often runs out quickly, but God’s patience is extraordinary. He gives people opportunities to repent, return, and grow. Many times in our lives, we fail, struggle, or drift spiritually, yet God continues to call us back with love.

The verse also says He abounds in goodness and truth. God’s goodness means His intentions toward His children are always pure and loving. His truth means He is completely trustworthy. The world changes constantly, but God’s character never changes. What He promised, He will fulfill.

This verse ultimately points us to Jesus Christ. In Jesus, we see the mercy of God touching sinners, the grace of God forgiving the broken, the patience of God with imperfect disciples, and the truth of God fully revealed. The cross stands as the greatest demonstration of Exodus 34:6. God is both holy and loving, just and merciful.

When we truly understand God’s character, fear begins to give way to trust. We stop seeing Him as distant and harsh and begin to know Him as a faithful Father. His mercy invites us to repentance, His grace gives us hope, and His truth gives us stability in uncertain times.
